Measure the facing correctly

Stand on the threshold of the main door, back to the house, looking out.
Hold the phone flat with its top edge pointing straight ahead; keep clear of iron gates, vehicles and electrical boxes.
Record the exact degree and measure again at two or three points.

Why record a degree instead of a direction name?

Because a direction such as “Southeast” spans 45° and covers three mountains. A degree tells you exactly which mountain, and one number names both the facing and the sitting.

Is a house facing 7.5° in Zi or in Gui?

In Gui. Each boundary belongs to the next mountain clockwise: Zi runs from 352.5° up to 7.5°, Gui from 7.5° up to 22.5°. Facings close to a boundary should be measured several times.

Does the compass on this page replace a real measurement?
