# Sitting and facing (坐向)

> Sitting is the side a house leans its back against; facing is the side it looks out from. The two are always exactly 180° apart: a house facing 135° (the Xun mountain) sits at 315° (the Qian mountain) — a Qian-sitting, Xun-facing house.

## Explanation

For homes, facing is usually measured from the façade and main door looking outward: stand on the threshold with your back to the house and face the street. The degree you read is the facing; add or subtract 180° for the sitting.

The formula "sitting X, facing Y" names a mountain at both ends, so one degree is enough to name both correctly.

## Questions

### Is facing taken from the main door or from the façade?

In most townhouses the main door is on the façade, so they agree. When the main door is clearly on a side wall, record both degrees for your feng shui master; in Home Check the facing bar follows the main door.

### Does sitting matter as much as facing?

Yes. Sitting is the home's support, and readings such as the birth-year mountain or the altar look at the sitting side too.
