# Hide the wind, gather the qi (藏风聚气)

> "Hide the wind, gather the qi" — shelter from wind and energy is kept — is the root principle of feng shui. The Book of Burial says qi scatters in the wind and stops at water; the ancients gathered it so it would not scatter and guided it so it would come to rest, hence the name feng shui, wind and water.

- Vietnamese: Tàng phong tụ khí
- English: Hide the wind, gather the qi
- Chinese: 藏风聚气
- Chinese characters: 藏风聚气
- Also called: Tàng phong tụ khí · Cang Feng Ju Qi

## Explanation

This principle explains why feng shui prefers land with sha on both sides, support behind, an open bright hall in front and water that embraces it.

For modern homes, "hiding the wind" does not mean sealing the house: it still needs ventilation, only the air should enter gently, change direction and not rush straight through.

## How Home Check uses it

Home Check considers the real wind reaching the main door and how well the plan ventilates, to hold energy while keeping the home airy. — [Compass & site reading](https://myhomecheck.ai/compass)

## Questions

### Where does the term "feng shui" come from?

From the Book of Burial of the Jin dynasty, in the passage saying qi scatters in wind and stops at water; energy gathered and guided by wind and water — hence feng shui.

### Does hiding the wind conflict with ventilation?

No. Good ventilation lets air in at a moderate pace with a way out; hiding the wind only avoids strong straight wind that scatters energy.
