# The Shen 申 mountain

> A house facing 240° is in the Shen 申 mountain. Shen covers every bearing from 232.5° up to 247.5°, within the Kun 坤 trigram in the Southwest, element Metal. A house facing Shen sits Yin 寅 (52.5° – 67.5°) — described as sitting Yin, facing Shen. To be sure, measure the facing as an exact degree.

## When measuring and setting polarity

The closer a facing is to the 232.5° or 247.5° boundary, the more easily a measuring error pushes it into Kun 坤 or Geng 庚. When a reading falls within 1° of either boundary, measure again at several points before setting polarity.

Once polarity is set, every room, door or item lying within the 232.5° – 247.5° sector, seen from the center of the house, belongs to Shen.

## Questions about Shen

### Is a house facing 240° a Southwest-facing house?

Yes, but that is not precise enough. The Southwest spans 45° (202.5° – 247.5°) and holds three mountains, Wei, Kun, Shen; a house facing 240° is in Shen. Naming the mountain tells apart houses only a few degrees from each other.

### What does a house facing Shen sit on?

It sits Yin 寅, 52.5° – 67.5°. Sitting and facing are always exactly 180° apart.

### Whose birth-year mountain is Shen?

It belongs to people born in a Shen (Monkey) year, counted from the Start of Spring rather than Lunar New Year. When the main door or an active, heavy item falls exactly in Shen, say precisely whose Shen birth-year mountain it touches.
